One Eagle Ray or 100 Million Sharks?

If you follow the news, especially Underwater Times or some other type of environmental news feed, you probably read the story or saw the video clip of fishermen torturing an eagle ray. The man who shot the video, who was tracked down by authorities, says he received death threats after posting the video to YouTube, even though he took no part in the actual torture and killing of the creature.

Maybe I'm a little confused, but something seems a bit topsy-turvy here. Sure, the eagle ray is a protected species, and sure, any type of animal cruelty is bad. But why get so outraged over the killing of one eagle ray (which the men later ate) when there is a wholesale slaughter of sharks happening on a monumental, global scale?

Whoever sent the cameraman death threats should bottle that rage and refocus it on the industry that drives the killing of 100 million sharks every year, many of them for their fins alone. Shame on everyone who eats shark fin soup.
